During the 17th European Public Health Conference in Lisbon, RIVER-EU will host a 1-hour workshop. This event will showcase evidence-based vaccination interventions to increase uptake of MMR and HPV vaccination in underserved communities. The interventions were co-created with different underserved communities across Europe using the ‘participatory transferability analysis’ developed by the RIVER-EU project.
Event overview
Title: Transferability and adaptation of vaccination interventions: Learning from underserved communities
Date: 16:45 – 17.45, November 14, 2024
Location: Lisbon, Portugal
Event type: Scientific workshop
This workshop is an opportunity for public health professionals, policymakers, and researchers to gain insights into effective, context-specific vaccination interventions. Attendees will benefit from a series of expert presentations and an engaging Q&A session.
Objective
The aim is to understand the critical role communities play in designing effective interventions. We will describe identified barriers to vaccine uptake and explore local solutions co-created with communities by building trusted partnerships. We aim to demonstrate how participatory decision-making approaches can help bridge the gap between evidence-based interventions and the specific needs of underserved communities, ultimately reducing vaccine inequalities.
Key components of the workshop:
Introduction
An overview of the transferability of vaccination interventions will set the stage, focusing on HPV and MMR vaccine uptake in various underserved communities. The presentation will address facilitators and barriers from the perspective of these communities, and how contextual differences and commonalities influence the tailoring of specific interventions.
Country-specific examples
Partners will share their hands-on experiences in designing interventions to boost vaccine uptake in the following populations:
- Recently arrived migrants in Greece,
- Moroccan and Turkish communities in The Netherlands,
- Ukrainian migrants and refugees in Poland,
- marginalised Roma communities in Slovakia.
Each presentation will highlight common key elements with potential for transferability, providing valuable lessons applicable across different regions and communities. For more about the selected interventions per location, read here: Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia.
Discussion
Following the presentations, a discussion session will take place. This interactive segment will allow participants to engage directly with the presenters, ask questions, and share their own experiences and insights.
Join us in Lisbon on November 14th to discover how tailored vaccination interventions can make a difference in underserved communities.
